Guthrie, Thomas
(1803–73)
   Philanthropist.
   Guthrie was born in Brechin, Scotland, and was educated first at the University of Edinburgh and then in Paris. He served congregations in Edinburgh where he published in 1857 his The City: Its Sins and Sorrows. With the disruption of the Church of Scotland in 1843, he joined the Free Protesting Church and successfully organised a fund for deprived ministers. He was a well-known preacher and his book on the prophet Ezekiel was a religious bestseller of its time. However, he is primarily remembered for his philanthropy. He worked tirelessly for the establishment of ragged schools and for the temperance movement; his funeral attracted thirty thousand mourners.
